Apple iPad ad shows off Retina Display

Get a look at the commercial spot that Apple put together to promote the new iPad, focusing specifically on the super-high resolution Retina Display. The latest Apple tablet was announced at today's iPad event.

The New Apple iPad: Retina Display, 4G LTE, A5X processor, $499 on March 16th

iPad 3

Apple announced the new iPad at this morning's iPad event, and it looks like a stellar upgrade. What can you expect to find in the updated Apple tablet? Well, pretty much everything that we thought we'd see. The new iPad sports a 2048x1536 Retina Display, the highest resolution display that Apple has ever shipped, and that's ever shipped on any portable device. It's also packing in 4G LTE, compatible with both Verizon's 4G LTE network and AT&T's newer (and smaller) 4G LTE network as well. It's got a FaceTime camera on front like before, but this time the rear camera is 5 megapixels and can record in 1080p. Running the show under the hood is the new Apple A5X processor, which has a quad-core graphics chip. In an interesting note from the event, Mike Capps from Epic Games mentioned that the new iPad has a higher screen resolution and more memory than the Xbox 360 and PS3. The iPad also supports dictation with the press of the microphone key on the soft keyboard, similar to what you find on the iPhone 4S. Unfortunately, no mention was made of Siri integration.

The new iPad goes on sale on March 16th (next Friday!) and will sell for $499 for 16 GB, $599 for 32 GB, and $699 for 64 GB Wi-Fi models. If you want the 4G versions, the prices are $629, $729, and $829 respectively. You can pre-order one today from Apple.

Apple has sold 352 million iOS devices

352 million iOS devices

This morning at its iPad event, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced that the company has sold 352 million iOS devices. That includes iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, and is absolutely astounding when you really think about it. Also announced, iOS 5.1 will be available later today.

Will the iPad HD feature haptic feedback that lets you “feel” displayed objects?

Senseg haptic iPad

There's a little company out there called Senseg that makes tactile displays using an electrostatic field to simulate the feeling of friction and different textures right on the touchscreen, and the last-minute rumor of the day is that the technology might be the big secret feature of the iPad HD. The folks over at Pocket-link spoke with a Senseg rep, and were told that the company wouldn't be making any statements until "after Apple's announcement." Kind of odd and interesting. Either the person knowns they need to keep their mouth shut, or there's really nothing there and they just want a little publicity. However, in mid-2011 it was reported that Senseg was partnering with "a certain tablet maker based in Cupertino," and Apple's invitation for today's event does read "We have something you really have to see. And touch." Is that a vague clue? We'll know in under an hour.

Apple Store goes down ahead of iPad HD and Apple TV launch

Apple Store Online is down

In just about an hour, Apple will be announcing its newest tablet, the iPad HD. The company will likely also launch an updated Apple TV set-top box that's capable of 1080p output. As is typical before these events, the Apple Store Online is down. We'll have coverage of the event as it happens.

iPad HD march 16

Okay, so we know that the name of the next Apple tablet is iPad HD, we know it will have a super high-resolution 2048x1536 display, we know that it will be packing 4G LTE connectivity, and now we know when you'll be able to get your hands on one. As we'd guessed previously, the iPad HD, which Apple will be announcing tomorrow, will be available on March 16th for purchase. Apple Stores are already planning for the launch, which would take place 9 days after tomorrow's announcement. That's a similar timeline to iPad launches in years past, and is therefore not surprising. Our friends at 9to5Mac are reporting that they've received similar information.

iPad 3 to officially be named “iPad HD”?

iPad HD

At tomorrow's Apple iPad event, the next iPad will be revealed to the world. We've been tipped on the fact that it'll have a ridiculously high resolution display, and that it will likely pack in 4G LTE for the AT&T and Verizon models, both of which are exciting prospects. Now we're hearing that what we've been referring to as the iPad 3 all along will likely be given a different moniker: iPad HD. It kind of makes sense, and it kind of doesn't. I mean, the display is going to be a ridiculous 2048x1536 in resolution. That is way better than 720p or 1080p, something other tablets have yet to achieve. Further, since this iPad will sport a super high resolution display, that means future iPad will, too. Whatever though--the point is that Apple has settled on a name for the next iPad, and it's iPad HD. We'll have all the details from the announcement tomorrow!

Using iExplorer to search your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

iPhone jailbreak iexplorer

The iPhone has been a game changer from the beginning, but many nay-sayers complain about the lack of user control that iOS devices suffer from. With many phones

Normally when you connect a storage device to a computer, you’re given the option of managing its files. You’re able to locate individual files for exporting and editing purposes. However, trying to attempt this with an Apple iOS device is a different story, since they aren't recognized as a mass storage device over USB. There are roundabout ways of bypassing this, but who really wants to mess around with that? We’d rather connect the iPhone and search our files through a Finder- or Explorer-like UI. Thanks to the guys over at Macroplant, you can now search your files on an iPhone.

iPad HD set to launch this fall alongside iPhone 5

iPad HD fall 2011

We've been hearing whispers for months that Apple would be releasing a third iPad this fall, and just had a hard time believing it, especially when they proclaimed 2011 as the Year of the iPad 2. However, word is coming in from multiple sources now saying that Apple will definitely be releasing a new iPad this fall, most likely at the same September event that they'll use to introduce the iPhone 5 to the world. According to the guys at This is my next..., the new device will be called the iPad HD, and will be sold alongside the existing iPad 2. It will simply be a pro model with a high resolution display, sporting a 2048 x 1536 resolution, and may boast pro apps like Final Cut or Aperture. Definitely an interesting rumor, but of course, take it with a grain of salt until Apple makes it official.
